Are You A Stress Factory?
Dr. Mort Orman here and today I want to shed light on another big (i.e. humongous) secret for eliminating stress.
This secret lies in the answer to this question: “Are you a stress factory?”
And once again, cutting to the chase…it’s most likely: “Yes you are!”
Victim Or Causal Agent?
Most people believe they are victims when it comes to stress.
They believe in a trilogy of false but popular conclusions:
- Stress comes mostly from outside forces beyond our control;
- Modern life is inherently stressful, therefore you can’t do much to avoid or eliminate having stress;
- The major causes of stress are obvious and most people can easily spot them.
One thing they don’t understand is that their own body is an amazingly powerful stress-producing “factory.”
Our bodies (which include our “minds”) produce stress on a daily basis.
Every time we feel anxious, our bodies are generating this emotion.
Every time we feel angry, our bodies are generating this emotion as well.
And every time we feel tense, irritable, worried, depressed, hopeless, dejected, ashamed, intimidated, or overwhelmed, our bodies are actively contributing to these stressful experiences as well.
Thus, we are all stress producing factories, whether we know it or not.
The Power Of The Invisible
The reason we don’t know that we (i.e. our bodies) are stress producing factories is because most of this production takes place outside our conscious awareness.
The internal thoughts, beliefs, opinions, expectations, and habitual behavior patterns which generate most of our stress are largely “invisible” to us as we go about our day.
Our focus is typically aimed outward, as we navigate challenges and obstacles which appear in clear view.
Our focus is rarely directed inward, and even if it were, we wouldn’t know what to look for anyway.
So our powerful stress producing factories (our bodies) keep on functioning as if they were hidden underground, where nobody can see this internal activity, and no one can question its daily output.
Here’s Secret #2
The second humongous secret for eliminating stress is to accept that your body is a magnificent stress-producing factory, and stop thinking you are an “uninvolved victim” of the stress you experience.
You (i.e., your body) is actively producing much of the stress you experiece. You just don’t see this happening because it’s all going on “underground.”
But people who become very good at eliminating stress from their lives have come to terms with this invisible reality.
They’ve accepted it, and then they’ve invested time and energy to find out exactly how their internal factory actually works.
They’ve learned how to identify the internal causes of their anger, frustration, anxiety, worry, irritation and other negative emotions.
They’ve learned how to identify the internal patterns that occur automatically and tend to destroy their most precious relationships.
They’ve learned how their bodies generate needless stress at work or at school.
And they’ve learned how their bodies generate needless stress in many other areas of life as well.
In other words, they’ve accepted that they are not uninvolved victims when it comes to experiencing stress—even though it may look and feel like they are, and even though others around them will reinforce this faulty view.
They’ve accepted the notion that their bodies (and minds) are producing most of their stress, even if they don’t know for sure exactly how this is happening.
