Dr. Mort Orman here and today I am announcing that “stress elimination” will be the official theme for this year’s National Stress Awareness Month (April 1-30).
I have been the sponsor of National Stress Awareness Month, every April since 1992.
And as the sponsor, I get to choose a theme if I wish.
Some years I select a theme, and some years I don’t.
This year, I thought it important to highlight the option of eliminating stress as a better and more attractive alternative to simply managing our stress, daily and forever.
The Purpose Of Stress Awareness Month
I created National Stress Awareness Month 24 years ago to give health professionals, health promotion organizations, wellness advocates and other interested parties an opportunity to share their knowledge about stress (and how to reduce it) with the general public.
Each year, more and more people and organizations have jumped aboard and have sponsored local or national educational initiatives during the month of April, citing Stress Awareness Month as the unifying reason.
There are no set standards or processes anyone needs to follow.
Just an open invitation to share high-quality information with all who might be interested in learning how to reduce their stress.
Why “Stress Elimination” As The Theme For 2016?
Since Stress Awareness Month is about raising public awareness about stress, and how to best cope with it, I believe that the option of eliminating stress has received far too little exposure.
Mostly, people are “educated” about managing stress as their best coping option.
But this isn’t really true.
Managing stress, for the most part, only helps us decrease the bothersome symptoms of stressful problems in our lives.
It rarely does anything to address underlying causes.
Thus, our stressful problems rarely go away, because we are only managing symptoms and never get a handle on the more important root causes.
How Does Stress Elimination Differ?
Stress elimination, on the other hand, means that you know how to pinpoint and nullify underlying causes.
Many of these causes are habitual thought patterns and behavior patterns which occur entirely within us.
But we haven’t been trained to identify these internal causes or to know how to combat them.
These stress elimination skills are ones which anyone can learn, however.
The problem has been that most people are not aware that this type of training is now available.
So, since Stress Awareness Month is for raising awareness about anything new or useful that might help us lower our stress, stress elimination seemed like a perfect theme for 2016.
Stay tuned for more information and resources on this topic as the month of April approaches.
To your health, happiness and success,
