Dr. Mort Orman here and today I want to begin a three-part series on how to become even more happy, healthy and successful in your life.
This series will focus on what I call three key masteries that challenge each of us: self mastery, life mastery, and stress mastery.
Just think about these three things. Then imagine what they might look and feel like for a moment.
What would it mean to you if you had mastery over yourself, mastery over life, and mastery over stress?
How would your life be different than it is now?
How would it be better or richer?
Self Mastery: The First Key Skill Set
What does it mean to gain mastery over yourself?
This is not a simple question. In fact, there are many possible answers.
This is because, as human beings, our “selves” have many dimensions, and we can have varying degrees of control or mastery over each of them.
For example, how much mastery do you currently have over your thoughts?
How much mastery do you have over your impulses and temptations?
How much mastery do you have over your emotions?
How much mastery do you have over your body and your physical health and fitness?
How much mastery do you have over your food intake, fluid intake and nutrition?
How about your self-worth, self-esteem, confidence and optimism?
And how about your ability to recognize and tell the truth? Honestly speaking, how much proficiency do you have over this important self-mastery skill?
You see, there are many aspects of our “self” where we can have high, low or moderate degrees of self mastery.
And the cool thing about being alive is that our mastery over each of these distinct areas of our self can be improved, no matter how proficient (or not) we may be at any point in time.
Mastery Over Your Thoughts
Take mastery over your thoughts for example.
You’ve no doubt heard the adage “be present…live in the moment…be here now.”
Easier said than done…right?
This is because our minds are normally very undisciplined.
Our thoughts tend to wander to events in the past or to worries and concerns about the future.
We get distracted very easily. We purse tasks and ideas that don’t move us forward toward achieving our deepest goals.
Yet despite this widespread human tendency, many people have learned to tame their wandering minds.
Whether through formal mind-training techniques, like mindful meditation or other daily mental practices, they have learned how to keep their minds from wandering too far astray, and they’ve learned to focus their attention on what’s most important that’s in front of them right now.
Mastery Over Your Emotions
Having true mastery over your emotions is another key skill that most people lack today.
Most people do not have a high level of personal control over their strong emotional reactions—especially negative emotional reactions such as getting angry, getting irritated over minor things, feeling frustrated, feeling anxious, or worrying excessively.
What would your life be like if you learned how to gain massive personal control over these very common negative emotional reactions?
How would your feelings about yourself be better?
How would your health and happiness be improved?
How would your relationships with others, both at home and at work, be enhanced?
Self Mastery Can Be Learned
No matter what area of yourself you choose to focus on, self mastery over that particular area usually can be learned.
In my own coaching and training work with thousands of individuals during the past 30 years, I have helped many people improve their thinking, improve their truth-telling skills, understand what is most important for them to focus on, and how to gain massive control over their negative moods and emotions.
Many of the books I have written over the years contain powerful insights for how to master one’s self. The same is true for the workshops and other group trainings I’ve conducted over the years, as well as the personal one-on-one coaching programs I offer.
In fact, if you really want to get a big jump ahead in learning not only how to master yourself, but also how to master life and stress as well, I invite you to attend my upcoming one-day live stress relief workshop titled “How To Become A Low Stress Person In A High Stress World.”
For those of you who live in or near the Baltimore area, or for those who are willing to travel in for the day or weekend to have an enjoyable, life-changing experience, the workshop will be held on Saturday, April 16th in Hunt Valley, MD.
You can download a PDF flyer about this event at https://docorman.com/seminar.pdf and you can register to attend at https://docorman.com/april16 (50% discounted early bird rate available if you register before April 1).
Hope to see you there.
